His impressive performance earned him a contract with Sauber. Raikkonen officially made his entry into Formula One in 2001, going on to record nine points in his celebrated rookie campaign. Following reams of speculation, he joined team McLaren in 2002 and instantly became a force to be reckoned with, scoring 24 points and four podiums. 2003 was better yet, as the young Finn won the Malaysian Grand Prix and finished second behind Michael Schumacher in the Driver’s Championship.
After a disappointing season in 2004, due in large part to repeated engine malfunctions, “Kimppa” rebounded with a season for the ages in 2005. With his eyes on the prize from the first race to the last, Raikkonen recorded seven wins, six pole positions, 10 fastest laps, and 112 points. Unfortunately, his prodigious output wasn’t enough to win the Driver’s Championship and he finished second once again, this time behind Renault’s Fernando Alonso.
